INDIANAPOLIS—Hoosier residents oppose federal legislation that would take away employees’ right to a secret ballot to vote in union elections and for contracts that govern employee wages, benefits, work hours, and other worker employment matters, according to a new poll released today.

Sixty percent or more Hoosiers oppose all aspects of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), more commonly referred to as “Card Check.”  About 66 percent of Hoosiers oppose the provision that could take away secret ballots for workers in union elections, 70.50 percent oppose giving the federal government the power to intervene in small business labor disputes, and 60.25 percent think the federal government should have less and not more power concerning wages, benefits and other employment matters.

The survey, sponsored by the Economic Freedom Alliance, was conducted by We Ask America, a Midwest-based polling firm that has polled more than 4 million households in the past four years. In all, 800 Hoosier adult residents agreed to participate in the poll, which was conducted July 13-14.  The poll had a margin of error of ±3.74%.

Twenty-one percent of the respondents lived in households with a union member.  Results among this group showed a higher opposition level to the primary tenets of the EFCA:  nearly 80 percent oppose eliminating the secret ballot and more government intrusion into employment matters.

According to pollster Gregg Durham, the Indiana results mirror other states and national public opinion on the possibility of losing the right to a secret ballot.  Key results are shown below.

“This poll indicates that residents of Indiana are strongly opposed to the provisions of the Employee Free Choice Act, which eliminates the right to secret ballots in unionization elections and mandates binding arbitration and harsher penalties for employers,” said Durham, who has polled more than
42,000 people throughout the Midwest on this issue. “The Indiana results are consistent with those polls we’ve conducted in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Missouri—in general, people understand what’s at stake should Card Check become law and are opposed to it.”
